Field to Frame worked with Montana State Parks and their constituents to develop an Interpretive Master Plan for Fort Owen State Park. The 11-month process resulted in a plan that brings interpretation up to date with perspectives shared by the Salish Culture Committee as well as five other Indigenous tribes that have a history on the trading post’s landscape. The project also involved a Next Generation Stakeholder component, engaging area high school students.
Project Goals
- Provide a high-quality experience for visitors through orientation and interpretive opportunities that encourage increased visitation to and stewardship of Fort Owen State Park by local, regional, and traveling visitors.
- Connect visitors with stories of Fort Owen State Park to inspire interest in exploring the regional and cultural history in more depth.
Share Fort Owen as a trading post and Indian Agency that influenced western Montana’s mid-to-late nineteenth-century history.
